Rent Free Haus
Design and documentation for a mixed vinyl and electronic music bar in Detroit’s historic Eastern Market. The intention was to develop a “public living room”. To achieve this the primary public spaces are broken down into 3 parts each with 1:1 proportions in an attempt to approximate a more domestic condition. The front room known as the “parlor” is further broken down by a series of modular wood panels into which a built in DJ-booth and record wall is delineated. the orientation of the DJ booth helps to articulate a dance floor while an arch is used as a mediating spatial device to articulate the parlor from the dining room. The arch acts as a physical and visual device separating the stand space from the seating area.
